arts debate could set the stage for some 21st century thinking

As Glasgow celebrates being named United Nations City of Music and Edinburgh heads towards the end of the Festival season, having secured its own place as a United Nations City of Literature, The Scotsman Arts Debate tonight seems timely.
It remains to be seen how many of 6.8 million “sold-out” seats in Beijing were actually occupied by sports fans (perhaps we’ll never know, given the confusion caused by the mass busing in of “volunteers”) – but ignoring TV and online audiences and looking only at bums on seats and tourists drawn to Beijing, it seems likely that rainy old Edinburgh’s own Cultural Olympics might not be far behind its sporting cousin…
