illegal downloads could actually benefit the music industry

In October last year, Radiohead took the unprecedented step of placing their new album on their website for (potentially free) download. Customers were to choose how much they wanted to pay for the album.
The band deemed it an "experiment" and many watched, keen to see the results. People would have to ponder what they thought an album was actually worth when they were given the opportunity to get it legally for free. Was this to be the first step in conquering the illegal file sharers?
